‘Kali’ is a cultured movie unfolding on the theme of love and rage. Told in a captivating and unique manner, the tight narration does not deviate from the main theme of rage. One can conclude that this is a thematic movie. The narration and flow are engrossing and natural to the viewers. ‘Kali’ is not fluffy with romance or the unusual lovely dovely of many mill stories. The main character is played by Siddharth (Dulquer Salmaan), a short-tempered man unable to handle slight disturbance. Siddharth is married to a beautiful young woman Anjali (Sai Pallavi) who is greatly affected by his husband's (Siddharth) anger issues.

Movie Review

The movie kicks off on a prelude that takes place in an eatery. This prelude itself enables the movie to unfold on the theme of anger taking this movie up to the second half. The movie starts off showing a distraught Anjali (Siddharth wife) moving out of their house at night and dragging her bags.

Anjali continues to drag her bags in the dead of the night and a sinister man is looking at her from a secluded wayside, in a flash, the narrative takes another turn with Anjali and the sinister man coming in fright as they come closer to one another. The suspense and the refreshing intense quality keep the viewer glued as they are eager to see what unfolds next and this makes 'Kali' a classic movie to watch.

In no time, an angry and frustrated Siddharth (Dulquer) comes after her wife Anjali (Sai Pallavi) in his car. The long journey creates a platform for reflection for the two lead characters. In this flashback, Siddharth the main character, whose anger issues started when he was a kid is seen hitting a kid who had made fun of his anger.

In a flashback, Siddharth beats up an entire student gang from a different college that had hit his friend. These sneak peeks flashbacks help the viewer understand that his anger has been there for a long time even before he met and married Anjali. This sums up his early childhood, part of his adolescent life, his marriage life with Anjali leading to the events which are happening that night narrated in a span of the first half of the movie. The flashback is played out and narrated beautifully with another flashback happening towards the end of the narration.

Now the fun part happens as the movie progress and turns to a thriller mode. The journey taken by the couple turns into a nightmare. The film serves as a great thriller from now on when Siddharth's anger heightens when they are driving to Masinagundi, Anjali's home. Along the way, the couple almost crashes when a car passes them without warning. Angry and furious Siddharth follows the truck and the incident slowly turns to road rage even as Anjali begs him to abandon the chase. This time Siddharth listens to Anjali's advice and slows down.

They stop by the roadside hotel owned by a gangster (Vinayakan) and once again Sidharth exchanges words with the staff because of his temper. This whole scenario portrays Siddharth as a man who allows anger to overshadow reasoning especially when he tells Anjali

One can say that Sidharth and Anjali makes a perfect pair. With the core of the narration given, they are portraying their characters parallel to each other robustly. Dulquer Salman (Sidharth) and Anjali (Sai Pallavi) get to neatly showcase their natural characters in a rugged robust way. The role of Sidharth as a young angry man with a flawless toned face and a handsome feature contracts his behavior while at the same time help him reflect on his nature as a hot-headed man. As for Sai Pallavi (Anjali), her character is cool, calm, impressive however she is crying almost the entire film as a result of her husband’s angry character.

After Anjali leaves the hotel, Chakkarra also leaves the same time and follows her towards the lonely road in a bid to scare her since she is not good at driving. She fails to find an ATM. Meanwhile, Sidharth is worried about her safety and he tries to escape the hotel, he is captured and locked in a room. All this time Anjali is driving with Chakkara following her behind, as the events unfold another truck driver witnessed the whole incidence.

That was one scenario that kept the viewer on edge as they did not know what will transpire. Remember, Siddharth is locked in a room because he tried to escape without settling the bill, Anjali is out looking for an ATM so that she can come back and pay the bill. Also, Anjali is being followed by Chakkara on a lonely road. This part shows that despite Siddharth having anger issues, he genuinely cares for Anjali's safety and is not willing to lose her in any way. This serves as redemption to his character and excessive rage of anger.

There are so many mundane elements interwoven to bring to light what excessive anger results in. This whole time Siddharth is still at the restaurant locked in a room, he is let out by a boy working in the hotel. He comes out and gets into a fight with a gang. The scriptwriter concurrently focuses on two events one at the hotel and the other one where Anjali is almost raped by Chakkara but gets rescued by the eyewitness in collaboration with the police who take her back to the hotel only to find Siddharth holding a knife.

The plot is driven by anger as the underlying cause of all the ugly incidences which are happening. Siddharth is arrested by the police since as a result of the hotel fight, John was critically injured. All these elements add thrill to the film. Anjali and Siddharth, give an exemplary character as they are nailing it to keep the viewer glued.

Dulquer (Siddharth) all over the narration gives a controlling performance beautifully seasoned to portray his issues with anger. For Anjali, she calmly accepts his behavior as portrayed with the whimpering as Chakkara was drive chasing her, her understanding as Siddharth keeps on losing his temper and the time she playfully ate her potato chips come out naturally. Anjali dubbing is flawless as her tough, calm words were conveyed with emotions too.

Sameer Tahir did a wonderful job of developing each character in a single thread each one of them dealing with their character flawlessly. With such a serious plot, the director paid attention to character development and stuck to it to the very end.

This thriller focuses on the natural behavior of an everyday couple. The dialogue blends perfectly with the narration and the twists that start unfolding as the film progresses. Background sound plays a huge role, the loud TV blare, print and cash machine noise, the band playing loud at a party, and of course that these sounds reach a crescendo result in Sidharth reaching losing his temper from time to time.

The built-up of his spilling anger is done well, kudos to the director. ‘Kali’ film ends with Sidharth and Anjali driving back home; he agrees to work on his boiling anger.
