4 years have passed and I still don't get bored watching this movie. A really inspiring movie and tells you the true meaning of life. The best part in this movie is it's acting, one of the best performance of alia bhatt and truly my favourite, you won't see alia bhatt in this movie but you will actually see a depressed, afraid and lonely kaira who pretends to be the fearless cinematographer. Srk is just mind blowing, even after having a not really big role whenever he will be on-screen you will just fall in love with him, his dialogue delivery will just make you have goosebumps! The confession scene was just mind blowing so well written and acted that I had tears in my eyes and even after watching this movie so many times I still do have! The dialogue "never let your past blackmail your present to ruin a beautiful future" was just so natural and true! The only negative point is that their deleted scenes were also mind blowing and I wanted them in the movie for eg: the plane scene and many more! One of the most unique movies ever made! Not the typical Bollywood romantic drama the good bye scene was just awesome! Maybe an incomplete story! A thoughtful and inspiring film which everyone must watch!
Dear Zindagi is nothing short of inspiring. As a PSA for normalising seeking mental-health therapy, it works effectively. Films definitely have a much larger reach than, say, newspapers or books in raising awareness on such issues. Throw in SRK in a Bollywood feature and you can see how the influence expands massively.
While Alia's performance is almost on point, SRK is truly the charming superstar here, owning the film with his hotness and charisma, and looking every bit like a proper therapist. Imagine all hot men like him becoming therapists. The world would be such a happier place!
The film isn't far from perfect, though, and has its share of issues. For starters, the genders of the patient and the therapist could have been swapped. Currently, it looks like a charming male superstar rescuing a cutesy damsel in distress and making the film his ego machine. A 40-year-old cis heterosexual man as a patient, with issues such as toxic masculinity and self-sabotage, would have worked better. Even if the therapist were male, Kaira, instead of hailing from a relatively aware generation, could rather have been a 30- or 40-something woman juggling family, in-laws, job and kids, and on the verge of a breakdown. Even better, a person for whom everything is going brilliantly in life, but they still decide to undergo a regular mental-health "check-up", and that's when the underlying issues come to light in time before it would have gotten too late.
Another niggling issue about the film was Kaira's privilege. Kaira works as a DOP, hails from a rich family, owns a palatial bungalow in Goa and has graduated from a New York film school. It's very easy for an affluent person like her to throw money on her mental health. Therapy is anyway a very expensive affair in India, so her character should rather have been someone hailing from a not-so-privileged background and Jag should have been a poster boy of affordable mental-health services in the country. Maybe that could be the plot for Dear Zindagi 2--Kaira now becoming the therapist and offering affordable or even free services to the not-so-privileged.
Some other issues, too, stick out in the film. For instance, the comparison of a partner search with chair-shopping (really?!) and the outdoor sessions between Kaira and Jag (are they allowed?). Barring these bits, the film is an uplifting watch, with something for everyone.
